I am recruiting PhD students within my ERC Starting Grant project on the limits and efficiency of coding against synchronization errors, hosted at Instituto de Telecomunicações and IST - University of Lisbon, Portugal. The starting date for these positions is flexible from February 1, 2026 onwards.

Applicants should have a strong math background and a taste for discrete mathematics. Background in coding and information theory is not required. A solid background in another area (such as algebra, analysis, combinatorics, graph theory, optimization, number theory, probability theory, theory of computation) is also valued. These positions will be funded by tax-free scholarships of 1800EUR/month, plus an extra amount to cover tuition fees.
These positions come with generous travel funding.
